IHSS Elderly Care
Department of social services
This Exist?
Do you know there is a government program that will pay you to care for senior citizens? It’s actually quite simple, you apply through the government site, and they will set you up with a safety class and you can be a caretaker.
You essentially help a elderly with simple house chores, things that don’t require you to lift 40lbs+ or clean biological waste.
It’s actually convenient, I see people working 2-3 hours after their job and it’s reasonable supplemental income.
Why You Should Do It
This is one of the few services in the government that actually help people, with politics in shambles right now, there are rare programs like this to help citizens.
The hours are flexible, I’ve seen people do this after their main gig, or on the weekend. Although you get paid minimum wage, it’s not bad work.
The people that did this, just do simple stuff like cleaning, sous chef, checking if their recipient is alive. Very basic stuff, it may also result in a free meal if you’re helping them cook, and if they don’t mind you eating their food.
More Benefits?
Working for the IHSS grants you health insurance, dental, vision, and emergency care. After all it is a government program.
Technology is up to date as you can clock in on your phone or computer, there is no supervisor to dart on the clock with your attendance, so you can be 15 minutes late and still be okay.
Negatives
You can work as many hours as you want, however you won’t be given overtime even if you work more than 40 overs a week, or more than 8 hours a day.
This may sound like a violation, but it is basically not possible.
Each Elderly is granted a variable amount of time that is calculated on a bi weekly basis. It doesn’t exceed 40 hours a week, so it’s basically impossible to hit overtime with one client.
Now you can care for 2 clients, and with their added time it can exceed 40 hours a week, however, working for separate clients technically mean you’re working at 2 different jobs, and they don’t accrue as if you’re working at one job. So this loophole can’t be used, surprisingly the government thought about this.
Worst Case I’ve Heard
The worst I heard about working with elderly through IHSS is that the Recipient is a total Karen. Meaning the person that you may care for might be a absolute douche.
I heard about a old lady that yells at her workers all the time, and she cycles through them every week. She would complain about every detail, such as the wiping the glass in every corner, and cleaning needs to be immaculate in accordance to their standards.
When cooking happens they demand the tomatoes to be cut in the exact order and shape or they can’t swallow it. Strange because they have dentures, they can just chew their food, but they like to swallow some certain foods for some reason.
Uncommon Case
Worst than getting micro-managed by an senior, is getting micro managed by a young abled bodied person.
Some of these homes may have elderly people that are paired with a person that can obviously take care of them, but they rather have someone else to do it.
You can tell what kind of mentality this type of person has, they serve as a yapping dog that act like they’re the boss of a fortune 500 company.
Basically delegating, and pointing at every imperfection that you’re doing. We get that no job is perfect, but there are people that likes to finger point and pretend to be smart.
Friend story; my friend cared for an elderly across town 8 years ago. When she went upstairs to this low income housing unit, the old lady was standing there with all the cleaning tool and demand she start cleaning asap because she’s on the clock.
The old lady would yell at her while she’s cleaning and threaten to call the cop if she tries to steal anything. Hands on her waist and the whole deal.
My friend was a broke college student, and she was straight about the money, she didn’t let it bother her, she endured it, until she found another recipient to care for 5 weeks later.
That’s the worst I’ve heard, I have yet to hear about assault or sexual harassment. It’s not surprising that it happened, but as far as within my radius of hearing IHSS stories, it’s been pretty peaceful so far.
Would I Do It?
Sure, it’s flexible if you have a chill senior. college students will treat the job like they’re visiting their grandparents. Do a few chores, and open their laptop to do some homework.
My friend’s mom did IHSS while working on her business on a laptop. Which is why I’m telling you guys about it. If you think this information is helpful, tell your family about our newsletter Mythtolegend so I can help more people.
